Improving maternal and infant health

Our maternal and infant health research theme aims to advancing the understanding of lactation physiology and infant feeding practices to improve outcomes for mums and babies.

Harnessing the milk microbiome for maternal and infant health

Feb 25 - ongoing | Funder: TBC | Status: Seeking funding

Human milk contains a diverse community of microorganisms - the milk microbiome. Our research aims to elucidate the relationship between the milk microbiome and health outcomes in both mothers and infants. By understanding the links between the diversity and richness of the milk microbiome with health outcomes, we hope to provide evidence to support targeted healthcare interventions to improve maternal and infant health, and practical solutions for common breastfeeding problems.

We are currently seeking funding from research funding bodies, but if you would like to help support our research, you can make a direct donation to our research fund at the University of Edinburgh.

Let’s work together

Coming together to share our individual ideas, expertise and perspectives makes for really fruitful research projects. Please get in touch if you are interested in collaborating, have an idea or suggestion for a research topic, would like to ask a question, or just want to chat infant feeding science!
