Baby Feeding Law Group withdraw Information for Food Banks
In 2015, the Baby Feeding Law Group (BFLG) published ‘Information for food banks; supporting pregant women and families with infants’. In their guidance, BFLG state that
food banks and other community food initiatives should NOT accept or encourage donations of infant formula.
They then go on to warn that food banks
may be held responsible if a baby’s health is put at risk.
This guidance received backlash on social media and was withdrawn and replaced with the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative, First Steps Nutrition Trust and the National Infant Feeding Network Guide for Local Authorities and Health Boards on supporting families with infants under 12 months experiencing food insecurity. We think this happened around Dec 2020, but as there was no announcement we are unsure.
Despite the withdrawal, the guidance can still be found online.
